Beach Exploration

Snorkeling anyone?

Ben and I have been here 2 days and explored 3 diferent beaches. Many of the beaches here are great for snorkeling and swimming because they are protected by reefs.

Wednesday we found a great public beach not far from our hotel. Lydgate Beach has 2 large protected pools for beginning snorkelers and kids to swim with very little wave or swell action. This beach also has a lifeguard. We went here to get our snorkel wits. It was an interesting experience to share the beach with a bunch of roosters and chickens. They are EVERYWHERE on this island. Thankfully there aren't pesky and sort of do their own thing. The trick is to NOT feed them.

Next, we found a public, but very private beach called Larsen's Beach. It was beautiful and it seemed we had the place to ourselves. There were people here and there, but they always moved on to their own private spot. It was lovely. Ben snorkeled here and spent a while watching a 400+lb sea turtle eating on the reef. He said it was pretty cool. That beach is super shallow so not a great spot for speargun fishing, but still a great spot to snorkel.

Yesterday we went to Tunnels beach. This beach is known for it's snorkeling and scuba diving. The reef is extremely large and has pockets of deep water where divers can go under the reef and explore tunnels. We saw some great fish and Ben met a couple of guys with spearguns. He is on the hunt for the perfect spot to catch our dinner and got a couple of hints from the guys.

Today we will explore a few other beaches. We may head South today as yeseterday the weather from Kapa'a - North wasn't very nice. We didn't mind the rain showers while we were in the water, but sitting on the beach in the pouring rain wasn't too much fun. :-)

We are having a great time and are already extremely relaxed.

Enjoy the photos and the update.
